Home Development Program really helps

My child (Caelan) is almost 7 months and has begun swimming lessons with Robyn at Shapland Everton Park. So far, he has had 2 lessons and these are his only 2 swimming lessons he's ever had. I was a swimmer and played water polo through school and uni and feel that becoming familiar with, and confident in, water (as well as learning to swim) is an integral part of childhood. I wasn't sure how early a baby could start swimming lessons, so did some internet searching when Caelan was less than 2 weeks old and came across the home program, which we started following as soon as I'd found it. Before starting swimming lessons, he was quite happy to float (supported) on his front as well as his back, and was also happy to move his head so that water flowed over his face - all, I am sure, because of the home program.

We have a big bath tub and my husband or I normally jump into the bath with Caelan when it comes to bath time. Tonight, I decided to show my husband one of our exercises that Caelan and I have been doing in our swimming lessons (the exercise where Caelan sits on the step, leans and 'swims' towards me under his own initiative). Robyn gave me some feedback during our lesson yesterday that I had been 'lifting' him too early and to let him say in the water a little bit longer, so I decided to try this during our demo in the bath tonight.

First of all, my husband was surprised that Caelan was happy to sit, unaided, in the bath, then launch himself towards me with no fear of the water whatsoever and was very content for his entire head to be submerged. Secondly, we were both surprised that as I practiced Robyn's advice and let him stay in the water longer than I had yesterday, he rolled over onto his back and surfaced, face-up, all by himself. He did use the bottom of the tub to assist him, but we were both impressed that after just 2 lessons, he instinctively made movements to roll himself over and float face-up in the water.

We can't wait to see what happens next as a result of our swimming lessons at Shapland Everton Park!
