Describe the heated pool at Shaplands?

The pool is heated to 32 degrees Celsius all year round as this is a comfortable temperature for mothers and babies; for toddlers; for pre school and school age children as well as adults to learn to swim in. Cool or cold water limits the attention span as well as makes learning to swim not such an enjoyable experience. The pool was designed by Bernard "Bernie" Shapland and the first specialized pool was built at Clontarf in 1973. Its design was the culmination of almost 30 years of teaching swimming and the knowledge of what would be a very functional teaching and stroke correction pool.

The pool features 8 different water levels so that no matter what the age of the child they can experience a controlled introduction to the effect water has on their bodies.

Outline the advantages of using a heated pool?

There is really only one advantage of having a pool heated to 32 degrees celsius and that is it makes for a very comfortable and relaxing environment in which to learn to swim. 32 degrees celsius water temperature is the maximum temperature we recommend as our operational temperature. Prolonged exposure to water temperatures above 32 degrees certainly can have a long term detrimental effect on teachers skin (up to 30 hours per week in the water) and on the water sanitation process. Sanitation agent absorption rates are inversely proportional to the water temperature.
